What’s disheveled, exhausted, and completely broke? Me! After tax-free weekend! There are many great things about living in Texas, home to the Dallas Hot Shot Deliveries team. Sunsets. The open road. Barbeque. The Mavericks. And, of course, tax-free weekend.
It might as well be a holiday. Actually, according to state legislature, it is a holiday. It’s a sales tax holiday, and it starts this Friday. August 8- 10th you will find that many of those back to school items you’ve been searching for can be purchased without paying sales tax. That means, for every $100 you spend on qualifying items, you’ll be saving the $8 or so you would normally spend on sales tax. Eight bucks? I’ll take it! As a whole, it is reported that shoppers save around $82.7 million on tax-free weekend.
While a tax holiday does give you a great excuse to get in some retail therapy, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. First of all, it’s important to know what’s included as a tax-free item. Our Dallas Hot Shot Couriers employees did a little research for you, and here’s what they’ve discovered.
In 2009, Texas legislature amended our tax-free weekend to include school supplies. That means binders, pens, pencils, book bags, lunch boxes, and calculators are all included in the tax-free category. Most clothing and shoes are also exempt from taxes this weekend. There are a few catches, though. First of all, the item has to be under $100. Also, this doesn’t include things like accessories, cleats, jewelry, or luggage. If items are purchased on a layaway program, or on a rain check, these items will still be eligible for no tax when you make the final purchase.
One last category included this weekend is a personal favorite of mine. All you mamas and papas out there, the Dallas On Demand Deliveries folks bring good news. Diapers…they’re exempt from taxes this weekend! Baby clothes and bibs…exempt!
So now that you know what’s taxable and what’s not this weekend, you need a plan. As with all our missions, the Dallas Hot Shot Delivery team has a proper plan for you to make the most of your tax-free weekend.
Strategize: Head to the Texas state government website Texas.gov to find out exactly what’s on the list of tax-free approved items. Then, make a list of what you need for the upcoming school year. Save big purchases for this weekend, and those little items that you can wait for, plan on purchasing another weekend. Know which stores you’re going to hit, and plan to get there early.
Price Comparison: Just because you’re going to get a deal on your items this weekend, doesn’t mean you need to spend more than you should. Most stores have their prices online, or, if you have time, peruse the aisles for their current prices. Know which items you’ll purchase at certain stores. Hit the shops with the lowest prices. Some stores will even price match, so if you do have a lower price on an item, but don’t want to go to ten different places, bring your prices in writing and price match on the spot.
Promos and Coupons: You know us at Dallas Hot Shot Deliveries. We aren’t the crazy couponers, but we’re darn near close. Hit the sales papers this week and see who is having sales. Or head to the web and check for special coupons and promos. Don’t be caught without a coupon! I think I have that embroidered on a pillow somewhere…
Tax-free weekend is a great chance to stock up for the school year and save big. Try these money saving tips, and you’re sure to come away with great deals and great stuff for back to school. Happy shopping!
